Plot summary

Cologne towards the end of the Second World War. The city is in ruins, everyone is afraid, many are dead. It is a time of great inhumanity. Cologne’s young Edelweiss Pirates refuse to submit to the pressure of the Nazi regime. They fight with the Hitler Youth and scrawl anti-war propaganda on walls. Karl is an Edelweiss Pirate; his younger brother, Peter, is in the Hitler Youth movement. The two young men have been alone ever since their mother’s death in a bombing raid; their father is serving at the front, and their older brother, Otto, has been killed in action. Otto’s financée, Cilly, is doing her best to survive the war with her children. Carl is trying to help her.

A genuine oddity

In many ways, a genuine oddity. It's a period film, yet made with a very modern, handheld shakycam style, where you can barely tell what's happening, as most of the action is missed by the camera whipping past it. Some of the sound is poor, so you have to rely on subtitles, even if you can understand the German. Despite these obstacles, there are some fine performances trying to get out, and it's a heart-rending story of survival in the face of adversity that makes you very glad that you haven't had to live through it yourself. Probably worth a look for German language fans and WW2 completists, but a tough proposition for general film watchers.

Enjoyed the movie!

It shows that not all germans were nazis during that time.
