Plot summary

Industrious accountant David Martinaud claims to be visiting his parents every weekend, but it's merely a cover for the labor-intensive refurbishing of his country cottage. The reason for David's secrecy is that his childhood crush, Lise, lives nearby, and, although she's married, he still believes they'll get together. His devotion to the idea borders on mania, and, when Lise's husband is accidentally killed, he quickly spirals out of control.

The "sweet" sickness of obsessive love - a film only the French know how to do so well

"Dites-Lui Que Je L'Aime" (1977) aka "Sweet Sickness" is a sophisticated, haunting film about "l'amour fou" (with the emphasis on fou) - a film that only the French can do so well (the old saying "the Americans make movies for kids, the French make movies for adults" comes to mind). At the same time, it is based on a novel written by an American woman - Patricia Highsmith - and it captures the dangerous possessiveness of the male psyche like only a woman (of any nationality) could. It is an exceptionally well-crafted film, featuring one of Gerard Depardieu's best - and scariest - performances, and a chillingly ambiguous ending. *** out of 4.

A French tale about love and obsession

This French love drama from 1977 shows young Gerard Depardieu ("1492", "Asterix") as an obsessed young accountant who lives in a dream world and falls in love with the woman of his dreams who is not interested in him at all. Driven by his maniac desires he becomes mad and violent against all the people around him and turns to a psycho killer. Depardieu's performance is really good, and there are some surreal scenes like the bloody final of the movie in a public bath where the mad guy tries to celebrate a bizarre wedding ceremony with his despaired love. A well done psycho drama with intense acting, but some boring moments as well.
