Mr. Prokouk debuts

Karel Zeman was one of the famous Czechoslovakian masters of animation. I understand that his most famous works were some features depicting Sinbad's voyages, but he started out with a series of shorts depicting an everyman named Mr. Prokouk. The shorts were apparently intended as a satire on Czechoslovakia's Soviet-backed government. The first was 1946's wordless "Podkova pro stestí" ("Horseshoe for Luck" in English), wherein the mustachioed protagonist finds a horseshoe and tries to use it for fortune to no avail. Then, he reads in the paper about what citizens are expected to do.It just goes to show that animation doesn't have to be fancy or have celebrity voices. What it takes is talent, and Zeman clearly had that. Definitely one that you should Czech out.
