Plot summary

For his project under the lauded First Feature Film Initiative programme, director Ka Sing-fung tells the heartrending journey of a woman whose life is forever changed by the children she takes in as a temporary foster carer. In a career-best performance, Sammi Cheng stars as Mei, a woman trying to get over the death of her young son through the children she welcomes into her home. Each ward offers Mei a different challenge and a newfound appreciation for the difficulties of motherhood, but when her dedication to the job causes her marriage to turn sour, Mei is forced to make a choice.

Fragmented Silence

Let's cut to the chase: Lost Love is a quiet, minimalist Hong Kong film that leans hard into its muted vibe-sometimes to its own detriment. The story feels like a patchwork of disconnected vignettes, each focusing on a different child. Just as you start sinking into the emotional weight of one kid's struggles, the film abruptly shifts to another, leaving all that simmering tension evaporating into thin air. It's like trying to hold smoke in your hands.The real standout here is Sammi Cheng's performance. She's fascinatingly ambiguous-present in the story yet weirdly detached, as if she's hovering just outside the frame. Close-ups of her face do most of the heavy lifting, turning subtle glances into something magnetic. There's a mystery to her character that the script never fully unpacks, which is both frustrating and weirdly fitting for the film's vibe.But here's the problem: Lost Love prioritizes mood over meaning. The fragmented narrative and endless lingering shots of empty streets, rain-soaked windows, or dimly lit rooms feel less like artistic choices and more like a crutch. It's all atmosphere, no pulse. The film captures slices of life with clinical precision-showing the numbness of daily routines, the quiet despair of unspoken struggles-but it never digs deeper. It's content to just observe, like flipping through someone's uneventful diary.There's potential here for a raw commentary on isolation or societal neglect, but the movie never commits. Instead of asking tough questions or offering even a sliver of hope, it just... exists. The emptiness starts feeling less poetic and more like a missed opportunity. By the end, you're left with beautifully shot scenes that amount to little more than aesthetic wallpaper. It's a mood piece that forgets to bring a soul to the party.

Hidden Gem

This film is a rare gem hidden in a sea of mediocre family drama. Especially since it's coming from HK cinema that many Cinephiles and general people overlooked. The plot is such an emotional rollercoster. Yet everything feels natural with no overexageration. The lighting feels dim not shiny and colorful. It suited very well with the theme and its story. Main cast, the couple, especially the wife's acting is very natural and we can see many subtle expressions and emotions with no over explanation. The plot and Sammi Cheng acting is a star of this film. I cried watching this movie and eventhough it's very hard for me to cry over a mere movie.Anything less than 9 stars isn't valid for this magnificent film.
