Something Else

Many cliché references come to mind with this film like "opposites attract", "it grows on you", and "it sticks with you". If you have already seen it then you see what I did there. It's an artsy, body horror, apocalyptic type of movie that is truly otherworldly. It begins with a seemingly one night stand on the brink of an epidemic that causes people to merge with their surroundings...becoming one.The main characters are polar opposites. One introverted and a hypochondriac of sorts, and the other a messy, extroverted, free spirit. Our couple begins to fall for one another deeply while locked down in an apartment building when things begin to take a wild turn.Their story is wrapped in a claustrophobic-cinematic-apocalyptic-scifi-fever dream that truly is something "else".If you enjoy artsy, psychological, body horror that is semi Lovecraftian then you will enjoy this film.I personally that it was interesting and even beautiful in some ways. I would love to see what this director could do with a bigger budget, but also...I think I enjoyed this film more due to the small budget effects that we often take for granted in our modern movie viewing. This movie won't be for everyone for sure, but for others it will be greatly appreciated for its uniqueness.

Cringe

Image and direction of the actors are very weak. An embarrassing movie with an accumulation of faults. Poorly calibrated sound. Often you can't understand actors. Scenes that require psychoanalytical deconstruction of the director: the woman who orgasms under stress (which is a topos of a rape impulse)... The female character -Cass- who dies (and assimilates) in Anx's mother's bed... In short, a very poor and sickly script, with no secondary characters and no richness. A waste of time. At the end, there are children who (as the scenario suggests) will adapt to the new environment, but they are never mentioned or announced in the course of the movie. A lot of money invested for a film too ugly to be released in cinemas, because of an old, inexperienced director, whose camera choices are often haphazard. So, a narcissistic and perverse movie, desperately trying to plagiarize SF scenes and structures, while hiding behind the repeated and providential "personal vision" label. The female character of Cassandre "Cass" has no existence other than to be the director's fantasized projection of a dominated feminine: she faces an apocalypse and, apart from the information that she works for polyhandicapped persons (so self-righteous), the screenplay doesn't give her any family or friends, brother or parents; whereas the character of Anx (the "anxious",... immature wordplay throughout the movie..., how can anyone seriously write today such a weak scenario), may be suffering from the loss of his mother. In short, what an unequal and limited vision - the opposite of a complex and intelligent movie! A movie written by a man with no concern for others or for women, who serves only as a fantasy of his own sexual dissatisfaction (which is the film's opening scene). The "love" is the dominant male's way of calming his anxieties (closet scene). Male gaze everywhere. This film tilts between Z, experimental, sci-fi and Lynch, of which it is merely a microscopic, immature plagiarism. What's more, in these experimental moments, it's not even a vision of a director but a trip made for pure ease with banal Fx AI image generators, seen a hundred times. The film begins and ends with AI-generated images that lack originality and personality - with fractals - philosophy for dummies - when at the very beginning and end you're asking for something personal. If it were merely megalomaniacal, it wouldn't be a flaw, but this is a poorly written, hyper-pretentious film with no philosophical merit. Evrything is cringe, like the "bigbrotherhood" (what a subtle)... dum and cringe.

Nothing ELSE matters

No pun intended - sometimes I come up with my summary head lines while I watch a movie. This was the case here ... if you have seen the movie, you probably understand what I did there ... if not, you may have questions ... though you will have a lot of questions (other kinds) after you've seen it too.But enough of my cryptic writing and on to the movie ... that starts off with the aftermath of a one night stand. The two we find in bed could not be more different ... at least that is the feeling we get. She is quite out there in every sense (though just a small amount of nudity, if that is what you are after, will be seen in the movie) ... he is more a closed off and in kind of person. The premise of the story will work more in his favor ... and you will start to slowly find out ... the guest room sounded way more sinister than it turned out to be ... maybe I missed something there. Visually this was stunning ... but especially towards the end ... it does take more time than some might be able to stomach ... is it worth it? Tough to answer that for others ... it is quite unique though.
