A little too much everything, but still a winner.

Dane Cook: Vicious Circle (2006) Director: Marty Callner First Watched: 3/25/25 6/10 StarsToo loud (18,000 sounds like all screaming at once in the audience), too drawn out for every single bit (improvisation which also leads to oft occuring suggestions), too sexual (especially with the MySpace generation screaming girl because he can be cute and guys because his material is disproportionately graphically sexual in nature), too vulgar (although one of my favorites from him, not featured here, is his "Fuk And The Finga").Dane Cook does have a distinct style. All-in comedy would be my apt description. He takes his sweet time for each one, although there is no denying that he does get physically involved in his comedy, something that should be appreciated- unlike the typical standup comedian, he actually uses the full length of the stage, a circle in this case, and a chair which he practically abuses as a prop! I cannot think of a better comedian better suited to running circles around a stage. This was filmed in TD Garden in him hometown, Boston, Massachusetts. Nice stage 360° arena. I have a nostalgic soft spot for Dane. He was my favorite comedian when I was younger (when old me would buy comedians on CDs & DVDs, things these teenagers have no idea about these days!). Confess to having a difficult time admitting how much worse he became over the years! This was not quite the end of the road for him, but it was getting there. The lengthy set up for each bit. Sometimes this is totally worth it, but other times is pretty over the top. Although Dane's entire shtick can pretty much be defined as "over-the-top", admittedly, and that's what his fans are attracted to. His best bits are probably not the sexual ones- because those have a very young, mostly male, niche target audience- but the more inclusive and interactive "Cinematic Adventures", "I Did My Best", "The Truth About Lying"- in all of these, seeing it live versus listening to a recording is akin to watching a musical as a Broadway performance versus listening to the musical recording- no recording, no matter how high grade, is going to be able to replicate Dane imitating various sexual positions in maybe disturbing detail, acting out squirming in his seat as he makes baby eyes at his father, even going so far as to mime climbing out the window, getting into bed, or driving a car ("If I were doing this in real life like this, I'd be all over the road!").This guy dedicated his special to his mother, Donna Cook. How much hate can me heap on a guy like that?

Not that bad

Though I thought that many of the laughs were undeserved and perhaps at some points forced, I thought that the actual performance was not all that bad. Firstly, talking for 2 hours and 12 minutes is an impressive feat in itself, but to a large crowd and maintaining that kind of energy throughout the performance is really good. Also, his material is not that bad at all. Though his stuff may not agree with certain senses of humor, I think that there is at least one joke for everyone, however, there is almost certainly a cringe-worthy moment for everyone as well. Thirdly, his improv is quite high standard (excluding the Jake part)and found it generally added to his performance. Finally, his observations are quite good, and though many of his observations were not specific to my context, he managed to draw the audience in to his point of view. Top Stuff.
